And here I go with a new review. This time about the Submit'er Challenge, the first only-women competition I am aware of, organized by Vanessa Reinsch and Collaborators in Berlin on 22th/23rd October 2011.

As I always said when I write a review, this is my personal opinion in my personal blog, and I always write about the good and the bad things, with the aim to state what it should be kept as well as what it should be changed for coming years. You may agree or not with me, but that is my opinion.

First the good things, which was almost everything. For 20€ registration fee for two days competitions, there were plenty of fruits and home-made cakes and drinks during the whole weekend which were for FREE for the competitors and for little money for the spectators. On the top of that, there were 1-2 hot meals at day, also home-made and delicious by the way. Again free for all the competitors.

You could sleep in the Halle, which had couches, showers, kitchen and even a living-room with books and games. That didn't cost any extra money either!

There were not medailles, but there were very cool designed Tshirts, and in girl cut!, for all the participants and there were Acai and Acerola drinks for the winners of certain things such as "best technical fighter" or "faster submission"

The fight system, each against each if there were 5 or less in the division or pool system if 6 or more, was really good. Using this system, you make sure that it wins the best and certainly not the one who may be lucky in her first fight. It also gives the chance, specially for beginners, to collect so much experience as possible for future competitions.

And they filmed all the fights! which is a great thing to do, specially if you are there alone without your team or just with your coach, or you just don't have a video camera.

So I have to CONGRATULATE Vanessa and her team for her great job!

Another thing I liked a lot and enjoyed very much was to see Elisabeth Olbert, from O'Neto Team in Vienna, fighting. I have known her for nearly 2 years and she is a good fighter and a great friend. She showed that her jiu jitsu has just reached the next level. I love training and fighting with her. Pure technique and flexibility! Congrats Liz!

	--

Things I didn't like? Well, I heard that someone was angry, I believe at me, for wearing a hair spin to hold my hair. I know they are not allowed for good reasons as injury risk, but it is absolutely not my job to check that. A fighter has enough to do with being fit and focused on her next fight. It is the job of the referee to check this kind of things, like piercings, rings, hair spins, length of the Gi and so on. So no offense to the referees, which in general terms did a great job, but I will not take the fault of someone' else.

And well, the thing that I really didn't like (and I think I was not the only one) is that the rules were not respected. The written rules that I was handled the day prior to the competition as well as explained again during the rules meeting, clearly stated that fingers on the face, grabbing the noGI cloths, slams or attempts to slamps, hit/knocks of any kind and stalling are COMPLETELY forbidden and would lead to warning and to disqualification. So why the hell did I had to put up with all those things and repeatedly during the SAME fight? In case that it is not clear enough, my opponent did each and every of those forbidden "techniques" on me during the same 30 minutes long fight, some of those more than one. And she not only didnt get disqualified, but she was not officially warned either. She was only "told" not to do it again, several times...

So I would like to know, what did you want her to make to get her disqualified or at least warned? an injury?

Well, I try to see always the bright side of the things and there is no misfortune that doesn't bring some good with it, so even if i went home with a broken toe and some bruises not typical of this sport, I was happy to have shown my opponent and the spectators that grappling/bjj is a sport where does not win the strongest or biggest opponent but the one with a better technique and leverage. And I may not got her to tap, but I was dominant, tried several submissions and played clean. It was definitely one of my hardest but also most satisfying fight of my life :-)

But please referees and organizators, don't let that happen again. It is not fair and it is dangerous, for the obvious reasons why those techniques are forbidden in first place.

My personal achievement, Gold noGI -55kg, Gold noGI -62kg, Gold Gi -58,5kg and Silver Gi Absolute Class.

Hard training, friendship and comradeship were perfectly combined in a way that (maybe) only girls can do. Unlike many male fighters (specially when they are from different teams), we are able to fight hard against each other and still be best friends. Many of us are even rivals in competitions, but does it mean we cannot have fun together and even establish a friendship? Of course not.

Through my competition life I have met so many girls and some of them have become good friends of mine, independently of who won or lost. Katja Schulze, Elisabeth Olbert, Mimi Rodriguez and Charlotte von Baumgarten are some of them. I was happy to see there in the camp too. We love training together because we have a common passion: fighting and it is hard enough to find girls with that same passion, which by the way it also determines up to some point your lifestyle, so why to ruin the possibility of making a new friend, with the one you share such a strong “hobby” and probably have the same lifestyle than you (a lifestyle that so many other people do NOT understand) just because you will face her in a future competition. Competitions are just that: competitions. And we love the adrenaline rush, beating our opponent and stepping in the podium as high as possible, but what we love the most is the game of BJJ, the fighting itself and to see how our game evolves. And that is partially only possible thanks to training as much as possible with other girls.

Back to the Camp: We had several training units of BJJ and Grappling every day, with breaks inbetween for resting and eating. The training consisted on good warming-up/condition training, technique and rolling. Yasmin was a great trainer and we all learned a lot from her. We also learn a lot from each other. We tried to roll/fight with so many different girls as possible, since that was an unique opportunity to train with so many different girls. On the top of it, we had also dance lessons on Friday morning and Saturday night. And of course, we also talk non-stop. ;)
The conclusion?: I am coming next year again, are you?

The new black belt Talita Nogueira from São Paulo, Brazil, is the new big name within the female BJJ world since she beated several black belts, including Penny Thomas in the medium heavy final, at the 2011 Worlds two weeks ago.
When on 5th June she won the most important BJJ championship in the world, she did not only make her dream true, she also inspired and became an idol for many people, specially women, since she is not a simple athlete, she is also a mum of a 7 years-old—daughter. She showed us that combining family and a World Champion title is not only possible, it is a reality.

	1. Which is your team?
I train in the Ryan Gracie Equipe.
2. When and how did you start doing BJJ?
I started 5 years ago, when some friends of mine invited me to train with them. I liked to argue and quarrel a lot * laugh * and my friends convince me to try BJJ. Jiu Jitsu changed my life!
3. What do you like more about this sport?
What I loke the most are the friendships I got to do in the academy. We are like a family. And in every championship I go, I make more friends. I love that. Apart from the condition training, I love this sport. BJJ is addictive!
4. You have a family, a daughter, and still you got to be world champion. How do you do it?
Thanks God, my family has always supported me. My daughter always wanted to train too so that to combine both things was always easy, of course with the help of my mum. My daughter trains Judo on Tuesday and Thursday at the same time that I train BJJ. Mondays and Wednesdays she trains BJJ with me. It is very rewarding for me to see her on the mat. It helps me to go on, gives me the strenght that I need. Since she also competes, I always try to be the best example possible for her.
I know a lot of families that train together, that is here very common and it is cool :)
I just think that parents should support theirs kids when it comes to d a sport, does not matter which one. They should show interest on the sport, maybe try it together. I think that is very important.
5. So your daughter also trained BJJ?
Yes, she started when she was 3 years old and she already collects titles like Paulista Champion of Judo, Paulista Champion of Jiu Jitsu, Champion of Sao Paulo Cup... etc
6. How often do you train?
I train every day. I am used to it and I would feel weird otherwise
7. Your victory was very emotional. Many people cry with you out of emotion. Now that two weeks have gone and everything calmed down, what do you think about it? What does this title mean to you?
I still live like in a dream. When people ask me I just can say that I am very happy and that I like the feeling. Very few people knows everything what I had to go through: very hard training, diet... and I have to thank everybody that support me: my sponsors Koral and Arena Verde, my team Ryan Gracie, my family....
8. Do you think about coming to the next European Championship?
I would like to fight so many competitions as possible. I expect to get some sponsors that helps me to compete more. I am travelling now in September to England to fight ADCC. I am already training for it and I hope to do a good championship
9. Which is your opinion on Caio Terra and Leticia Ribeiro statements about the usage of steroids?
Well, that issue is very delicated. I am not going to judge or accuse anybody, but it is obvious that a people are “using” a lot... and that is not right and certainly it is not fair for the people who does not take anything. I think that the federation should find a way to stop it. I know how hard that is, but all the top sports have anti-doping tests. BJJ should have too.
10. Do you like any female fighter on particular?
I admire all the female fighters that go into the mat to fight. I don't have any special fighter I would like to fight against. I just want to fight, does not matter who against. I would like to congratulate all the girls who are representing our sport
11. Which is your project now as a new black belt and world champion?
Train, train and train. My jiu jitsu can still improve a lot and that is my only goal.

I haven't written in a while, partially because I didn't have the time but mostly because I didn't have a topic to write about. However, for a couple of days I have been wanting to write a certain article and finally today I found the time to do so. I would like to write about Katja Schulze and Susanne Skrobak, two friends of mine but above all, two clear examples of BJJ dedication, personal development and growth and how hard work gets paid off.

Susanne Skrobak is a blue belt from the Frota Team, Switzerland. She got injured last year but even such a serious injury could not stop her. Her energy and love for BJJ was bigger than that. On 3rd November 2010 she had her first leg surgery, on 8th December her anterior cruciate ligament (acl) was reconstructed. She worked hard on her rehab and probably she also annoyed some medical doctors to help her to make possible such an amazing quickly recovery . She was doing first technical training by middle of January.

Despite the injury, she never gave up with the idea of coming back as soon as possible, that meaning to compete in the Worlds 2011!

She worked against the clock and trained first sparring on April 18th. On June 2nd, she was in Long Beach, in the famous piramid competing in the world biggest and hardest BJJ competition, the IBJJF World Championships. There are no words to describe what this girl has achieved. She got to be back on the mat in a record time. She didn't get it to the podium (won first fight but lost second by disqualification) but there is no doubt that she is a real champion and a true example of overcoming difficulties and fighting for what you really want.

Katja Schulze is an experienced Luta Livre fighter from the Fight Academy Mülheim. Her passion for fighting took her to contact other people, specially women, with the same passion. And so she contacted me through Studivz (a german network similar to Facebook) some years ago. We started chatting and exchange experiences. She talked to me about Luta Livre and I talked to her about BJJ. We got to know each other better when she came for a competition to Hamburg and stayed at my place. I was pregnant and actually I was due that day, but I was so happy to have her and her team at home. She won that competition and I believe it was her first competition with Gi.

She continued to train mostly without Gi, in part due to the few possibilities she had to train with Gi, and she continued to compete and win. Eventually she got her blue belt at Luta Livre.

I don't know exactly when and why, and how much I had to do with it, but at some point she became more and more interested on training with Gi. And she decided to come to the European Championships and so we ended training together at New Years' Eve. Really crazy, isn't it?

We were together in Lisboa, Portugal, for the Euros' (where Susanne was too as the most enthusiastic cheerleader all times!) and we were again together in London for the Abu Dhabi Trials. Her jiu jitsu was improving considerably but she had still a lot to learn. She decided then to start training with Black Belt Peter Schira, a wise decision and her decision and hard work finally paid off when the last week she got 2nd place in the World Championship after 2 wins and one lost by advantage. Even if i was not able to be there to watch her fights, I know she fought really good. In the last 2 years since we first met we have shared a lot of laughs and some tears too, and I have witnessed how hard she has worked to improve her game. And she did it. She showed everybody what she has. I am so proud of her! So BJJ female community: be aware! Katja is coming. She has long legs and she knows how to use them ;)

Today Godzilla, Samuel, Gisele and I drove 4,5h from Hamburg to Amsterdam to fight in the Holland Gi Challengue. We did in total 900 km in one day but it was worth the experience and the results.

Samuel had two hard fights, the first he won by armbar, the second he won 8:0 in an amazing fight in which Samuel make the other guy to look like a white belt instead of a purple belt. Samuel did takedown, sweep and mount and an attempt of foot lock. Really beautiful.

I must admit that I had it easier. There were not purple belts for me to fight against, so I had to fight blue and white belts. I won my first fight 2-0 and the second one with an armbar that almost ended in a broken arm because the girl didn't want to tap out... and what am I supposed to do? It is a competition... so Tap or Snap

The competition run smoothly, the Compettior Tshirts were of good quality and good design, the level was high (except for female purple/brown/black belts that there were just anyone except me). They sold Acai for a good price (not like in other competitons). The hall was big and easy to reach.

So, in conclusion, a good tournament. Just one complain from my side: the winner of the male Elite class got a Gi as prize. The women nothing. This is just annoying. As usual.

Here some pics (iPhone quality) of the event

Here just a few pictures of the Abu Dhabi Pro Trials which were held in London, England, on 26th March 2011.

I got a third place in the purple/brown/black -63 kg division, after beating Dominique Vitry by kimura but then losing against brown belt Shanti Abelha in the semi-final by mata-leão.

Morena Cuba, from Team Aranha in Barcelona Spain, won in white/blue female division +63kg and got his free ticket to Abu Dhabi. Congratulations!! She did a great job!

But my biggest congratulations goes to Yasmin Wilson, purple belt, who made an awesome competition and won first in a very fast fight against Leoni Munslow by triangle and then submitted Shanti Abelha with a foot lock in the big final, taking the big price of the purple/brown/black belt female-63kg. Very well deserved girl! Just awesome.

Last Saturday 26th March, I attended the Abu Dhabi Pro Trials in London. I had fun, enjoyed once more being in a competition, fighting and getting to the podium. But to be honest, I expected something more when I registered for this event.

The registration fee was 50€ (early registration), 73€ otherwise. Pretty expensive, don't you think? On the top of it, one week prior to the event, all the competitors got an email from the organization about please not forgetting a passport picture, the Abu Dhabi federation formular and 15€ to federate in the Abu Dhabi BJJ Federation..... sorry but... wtf?? The competition was already expensive enough without those extra 15€, and if it had to be, well, shoudn't they then at least have announced it on the website so that people can decide by themselves if they want to spend so much before they register for the event, buy flight tickets, book Hotel rooms...etc etc? I found it very cheeky, truth must be said.

Ok, let's forget about it. You pay 75€ (registration fee + Abu Dhabi federation), make all the arrangements neccesary for the trip and flight to London for one of the best competitions nowdays. Ready to fight, ready to get the big price.

One day before the event, still not pre-schedule to be seen online, only one statement: weight in will take place between 8:30 and 9:30am.

Everybody got there at that time for the weight-in. Still no timetable can be found anywhere, neither online nor directly there in the sport hall. No brakets. Nothing. For your 75€ you don't even get a tshirt. You could buy it for 10 pounds though.

Some of the organization people said that timetable and brakets would hang after the weight in finishes. But it was not truth. there was lack of information during the whole event.

I was said that I fought at 17:45... almost 12 hours later! and I could consider myself hapyy because at least I knew when I was fighting. Many others just didn't know.

The brakets were not hang anywhere at all. You didn't know who you were going to fight. You could not know how you were doing it because there were not brakets nor final list of competitors so no idea if you were fighting semifinals, finals, just got a third position or whatever else.

There were not medals ceremony. You just had to go to the medals table and pick yours up and if you wanted to get to the podium and get a picture, well, you could do it by yourself : look for the other people who were supposed to be on podium too (if you were lucky to know their names) and asked them to come with you to make a podium picture.

So yes: there were great fighters there, tough fights, amazing BJJ competition atmosphere and for sure, the prizes (Abu Dhabi flight tickets, money and whatnot) are the best ever seen in a BJJ competition. But my question is, was it the 75€ worth?

Angie is not an average spanish girl. Yes, she is pretty, has dark hair and eyes and I bet she likes to party and be with friends, but she is definitely not a common girl. She is a fighter, a BJJ blue belt, and she is now pregnant too. Her story reminded me of my own one, and now I write about her to show everybody that I am not a rare case: combining BJJ and family it is perfectly possible!

Here she tells us a little bit about her pregnancy and how is she dealing with this new situation in her life from the point of view of a BJJ practitioner.

Angie has been training brazilian jiu jitsu for about 2 years and a half. She is a blue belt and used to train from Monday to Friday, one hour and a half each day, under the instructor Carmelo, a purple belt, at the Samurai Academy in Tenerife, Spain. Funny thing is that her instructor happens to be her husband too!

After she found out about the pregnancy, it took her some time to assimilate her new condition. The first thoughts that came to her mind was that she would have to stop practicing BJJ. From training every day to not training at all.... it is a big thing to digest. But after the initial shock and worries (and nature and some hormones doing well their job) she realized that it was in fact a good new: having a baby! and that pregnancy doe snot last forever. After all, she would be back on the mat sooner than she would think.

She found my website through her husband and we got into contact. I was able to give her some advice about how I dealed with the same situation 18 months ago. I am happy I could help her. I know how many doubts a women in this situation may have. Specially in a topic that intertwines the practice of a fight sport with something so delicate as pregnancy, a topic about which there are not so much written.

After our talk, she continued to train BJJ until approximately the fifth pregnancy month. Of course always careful. No hard fights at all, mostly techniques and mostly with her husband and trainer.

After the 5th month, she had to stop. The belly was already big enough to get in the way and she started having some aches and pains. It was the moment to stop with the physical training. As I always say: the best thing to do is to listen your own body.

Now she is close to the 7th month and continue to train, but in a different way. She attends the classes and watch the people train. She also watches BJJ videos at home. It is unbelievable how much can one learns only through observation.

Angie is now looking forward to be back on the mat but above all, she is looking forward to have her baby girl on her arms. She, her husband and the baby will make another wonderful BJJ family. I am very happy for them and I wish them the best!

Hopefully we meet some day and our kids can play and roll together!

Some pictures of the II Hamburg Open, hold on 5th and 6th March 2011 in Hamburg (Germany). This event included Gi and no Gi competition and it was a sucessfull weekend for Samuel Sanvicente, even more as instructor as as fighter, since several of his students got first and second places in the weight and open class divisions. Congratulations to him as instructor and to the students for their good job done, specially to Santiago Franco who, with a weight of less than 70 kg defeated in half finale a guy of over 100 kg, and Andreas Madsen who fought very technically each of his 4 fights to the final. They are the white belts surprise of the year and I am sure they will end the competition year with plenty of gold medals.

Another promising fighter with already a very long list of wins is: Peter, der Zerstörer (the "destroyer" in english) who won again his weight division in white belt and the open class with Gi. He won his weight division noGi and due to several injuries, he decided not to compete in the noGi Open Class. He is right now one of the best white belt fighters. So blue belts, be aware of Peter! he is coming after you! ;-)

Who is Kyra Gracie? She is the Brazilian girl who conquered for the 4th time the World Championship. She is considered the best fighter in this sport.

Like many of the 25 years old girls, the carioca (from Rio de Janeiro) Kyra is vain. More than many of the girls of her age, she is charming and sensual. In the crucial moments, she dresses in pink, spends a good amount of time putting make-up on and taking care of her long hair. But she is not a “Valley girl”. Her fingernails painted pink are used to stick them into the gi of opponents on the mat. The make-up, so carefully chosen, turns into a sweat paste when she is in action. Kyra Gracie is a jiu-jitsu fighter and international champion in this sport. She does justice to her name: she belongs to the Gracie family, the clan that made popular this sport in Brasil and gave to the world the most respected fighters. In this internacional scene, this girl with roogish looking girl is the newest star. In the fight that took place on Sunday the 6th of Juni in the USA, Kyra conquered the champion title for the 4th time and many people already considere her the best female fighter in this sport's history. “ I think it is too early for this title, but I am training for it”, she said so candily that she doesnt look like the strong person that defeat her rivals. ;Prior to her last fight, Kyra obeyed her vanity ritual: “ I want to desmistify that story about female fighters being neccesarily ugly, I want to show that it is possible to fight and be femenine”, she says. Besides her beauty, the champion irradiates a sensuality that turned her into a muse of this sport, usually practiced by tough guys. This sensual style was reinforced when Kyra posed for some daring pictures in which the low waist of the kimono allows a generous view of her curves.

This novelty was not welcomed by her family: “My uncles complained about it”, she remembers, “I explained them that it was about changing the image of the female fighters, but they didnt take it very well. They are very macho” That is not the only taboo that she has broken in the family. Until not so long ago, the women with the Gracie name coudn't reach the black belt and didnt fight in official competions. That was exclusively for the men. The family wanted her to do ballet. “ It was not my thing, the girls turned in one direction and i did in the opposite one”, she tells, “today, my uncles support me and whe find it funny when we watch videos in which I appear dancing when I was a child”.
Kyra's insistence has opened a path for the coming generations and her younger cousines talk about following her trajectory.

The curriculum of the champion is enviable: in six years of black belt she lost only three fights. Kyra is daring. She only trains with men and complains about them to be “very cheeky”. Why? “Because they stop the fights because of any knock. Women can bear more pain”. And it is not only on the mat where she faced these “swines”, in the parties in Rio where the male siege can be even aggresive, Kyra uses her self defense techniques: “ They are simple knocks, it is enough to turn around a fist and they give up”, she said. Also her family name that identifies the kings of Jiu-Jitsu has already driven away suitors who were being intimidated. Nowdays she is dating Leonardo Leite, a judo figther of the brazilian national team. The young woman is following the same steps that made her uncles to be idols in the USA. Her fights are broadcasted in the American TV, her fame fills the workshops that she gives around the world and during the whole year she promotes the Kyra Camp, which attracts her american admirers to participate in her trainings in Rio de Janeiro. But she always keep her femenine side: she has launched a collection of designer clothes and never faces up a fight without make-up: “ The last fight I did without pink nail polish, I lost. It made it a superstion”, she laughes.

Hey people, yesterday Samuel, some students from the Sportschule Hamburg and myself competed in Bremen in the fifth edition of the Hugging Day. This competition is particularly interesting because of its rules, which get to the core of the BJJ essence: you can win only by submission. There is not points and there is not time limit. A fight can only end if a fighter gives up (or get injured). Interesting, isn't it?

Samuel and I showed up in partner look, wearing our new rashguards and shorts sponsored by GiDirekt. It was a great and successful day, about which I would like to talk you about. So, this is not a review of the competition, it is just a short account about my own experience at this competition.

At the beginning I coudn't make up my mind about if I should compete or not. The Hugging Day was being hold not much after the Euros, in which I had compited. I was doing some holidays in Spain. Eating a lot, training not that much. On the top of it, this competition was a no-Gi grappling tournament, not a proper BJJ competition. Hence, the rules permit knee and foot locks that actually are not allowed in any other BJJ competition for purple belts, so though I am learning them during training, I am not used to use/defend them yet correctly in real fights. And on the top of the top, some things were allowed, some techniques like neck cranks and whatnot, which are completely forbidden in BJJ, from white to black belt. So there was some risk of injury here.

But then I saw Alexandra Sanchez in the competitors list. She is well known MMA fighter in Germany, who has won 4 out of 5 fights. And I just had to do it. I had to take the challenge. That was a grappling competition and I am a BJJ purple belt, so I had good chances to defeat her. And I did!

However in order to fight her, I had to sign up in a higher weight class category than my real one. I was 58 kg on the scale. My opponents were 67, +70, 68 and 66 kilos respectively. So it must be. Technique against strength and weight!

I won my first fight with a wrist lock, the next two fights with triangle and the final with an armbar.

Fighting against Alexandra was great experience. She is a good and strong fighter and it was not easy to win her but I am proud that my technique was superior to hers and that BJJ won over anything else. Hopefully we meet some day for some good training or in another competition!

The best thing of the competition though, was to see the new generation of fighters running around the mats, playing on the mat between fights and cheering up their friends or better said, their parent's friends. After all, they are the only thing that really matters.
